The Ambulance services must be equipped to meet a long-term need of the population. The professional competence requirements for manning ambulances are defined by the authorities in the emergency regulations. The wording of the emergency regulations of today allows a relatively wide range of expertise and most ambulance services have a requirement for competence that exceeds this.
The project is divided into three phases:
Phase 1 is a mapping phase that ended in February 2022. A systematic overview of competence levels and internal courses has been prepared.
Phase 2 intends to formulate recommendations on future competence requirements and tasks for the ambulance services. In the mandate from Helse Vest, it is pointed out that several occupational groups have a desire to work in the ambulance service.
These are ambulance workers, paramedics, national paramedic training (further education) and nurses with authorization as ambulance personnel or trade certificates. There is a need to establish a common competence strategy in Helse Vest, which can maintain the current competence needs in the ambulance services and the development of the profession. The mandate highlights a need to clarify the role of the ambulance service together with the municipalities in decisions about which patients need further treatment and hospitalization.
Phase 3 is to describe input to educational strategy.
