Evaluation of Medicine and Health 2023-2024

The Evaluation of Medicine and Health (EVALMEDHELSE) is performed by the Research Council of Norway based on the institutions self-assessment of development and performance over the 10-year period 2012-2022.

In short, the evaluation considers the quality and conditions of research activity, its fulfilment of research strategies and its relevance to key areas of society. 

The evaluation results in recommendations to the institutions, the Research Council, and the ministries.

Self-assessment report

At Stavanger University Hospital (SUH), the EVALMEDHELSE self-assessment report includes evaluation of the research administrative unit and 9 research groups, as well as presenting five high impact research cases. The self-assessment work culminated to a 270 page report, describing and reflecting upon the research relevance and quality of this period.

The Stavanger University Hospital (SUH) is a part of the Western Norway Regional Health Trust and has been a university hospital since 2004. It is currently serving a population of approximately 400 000 inhabitants. SUH is a large institution with more than 6500 employees and 550 beds.

"The strategic goals for research and innovation at SUH are determined by governmental and organizational acts, policies and guidelines. Research and education are legally mandated activities under the Health Trusts Act § 1, requiring health trusts, including SUH, to contribute to research and education. Key legislation guiding SUH includes the Health Personnel Act, Patient Rights Act, and Specialist Health Services Act, complemented by national and international documents outlining relevant goals to SUH research. Furthermore, SUH’s research targets sector-specific challenges, such as health personnel shortages, service improvements, and clinical advancements, with the overarching aim to contribute to broader healthcare objectives.

Finally, the research at SUH aims to be relevant for local and regional service delivery and health challenges. This includes the research aims of the Western Norway Regional Health Authority, collaborative aims between the SUH and its immediate community and local actors, as well as research addressing the challenges presented by building new hospital infrastructure in Stavanger."
